Welcome to the IP.com InnovationQ Frequently Asked Questions page. Here you will find some information about InnovationQ as well as some general background about Intellectual Property.
InnovationQ is an innovative system for managing intellectual property assets. It combines secure document management with a powerful and flexible workflow engine specifically designed for managing intellectual property assets. It turns intellectual property risk into opportunities.
Intellectual property is an asset. Like all assets, it has value and needs to be protected. Even more important, it is up to every one in a company to derive the maximum value out of that asset.
Primarily, many companies do not manage the intellectual property in an organized manner. In many cases, companies rely on ad hoc, human driven processes for safeguarding ideas and making decisions about them. Subsequently, many innovative ideas lie fallow or are lost. Since human processes are error prone, many mistakes are made. This represents a significant risk for companies today.
InnovationQ helps protect intellectual property by securing and authenticating it. Powerful tracking and reporting capabilities enable managers to see every event associated with an intellectual property asset, helping to detect synergies in their organization and guard against misuse. InnovationQ's workflow engine also allows companies to automate intellectual property processes in an easy to use, yet deliberate fashion that helps to insure error-free compliance.
A "digital fingerprint" is one term which describes a mathematical process that uses the contents of a computer file to calculate a value which is extraordinarily unique to that file. The result of the process is also referred to as a "message digest" or a "hash value." A digital fingerprint value is used to reliably represent a single computer file in the same way a human fingerprint uniquely represents a single person. To produce its fingerprint values, IP.com combines the output of two well-understood public domain algorithms called MD5 and SHA-1. Because of the nature of these algorithms, it is not possible to reverse the process and recreate the original file from its fingerprint.
InnovationQ calculates the fingerprint of every file which is submitted to it, including whenever a file is updated. On a regular basis, it transmits the latest fingerprints to an IP.com-provided service which is a part of our Prior Art Database. Once a day, a document called the "Daily Certification Record" is published in the Prior Art Database which contains the fingerprint values received that day. By locating the first Daily Certification Record in which we published a particular fingerprint, we can attest that the file used to calculate that fingerprint existed that day. We call this process "legal safeguarding." In effect, IP.com acts as an objective, third-party electronic witness to the fact that your file existed on a particular day.
